Poinsettias Can Bloom Again With Careful Seasonal Timing

Ohio State University specialist Harry Tayama explains that poinsettias can bloom again next Christmas with proper care. After Christmas keep in a sunny window at 65 to 70 degrees, water when soil dries but do not sit in water, and reduce watering by March to a very dry soil before storing at about 60 degrees. In mid April cut stems to six inches, repot, and use a mix of soil peat moss and perlite. fertilize biweekly once new growth appears, move outdoors in June, then cut back August 15 to September 1. To force bloom, provide 10 weeks of long nights starting October, with complete darkness from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. through Thanksgiving, keep near a sunny window by day, and continue watering and fertilizing through mid-December.
