McNamara to Push Merger of Army Reserve into National Guard

Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara plans to renew efforts in 1966 to merge the Army Reserve into the National Guard. The plan envisions a single force of 8 divisions and 16 brigades totaling about 550000 men, with the Reserve eliminated and the Guard remaining as the Army’s civilian backup. The Guard now has roughly 375000 and the Reserve about 250000.
