OPEC Hikes Prices Triggering Economic Worries
ABU DHABI UP I reports OPEC will raise oil prices by 14.5 percent in four stages through Oct 1 1979 with the first 5 percent hike on Jan 1. The move risks a small recession in Western economies and unsettles U.S. policy as the Carter administration blasts the decision. Energy and utility costs are seen rising with gasoline up 5–6 cents a gallon next year and NYC utilities planning price increases. The dollar weakens against the yen in Tokyo as markets react.
