Norwalk Firemen Clash With Mayor Over Staffing Levels

Firefighters Local 1199 leader says the city is seriously understaffed and should meet NFPA and American Insurance Association standards of 1.25 full-time firefighters per 1,000 residents. With Norwalk population 16 679 in 1970 the city has 14 full-time firemen. Mayor Goodsite cites improving insurance ratings and mutual aid as evidence of adequate protection while noting volunteer help and past hours reductions.

Tax Freeze Hearing Planned by State Board of Tax Appeals

The Ohio State Board of Tax Appeals voted 2-0 to hold a public hearing January 22 on a proposed temporary rule barring real estate tax increases without voter approval through 1977, urged by Gov. Rhodes. In Detroit, GM will add over 5,700 jobs as afternoon shifts resume at plants in Lakewood Georgia Leeds Missouri and Fremont California from long-term layoff pools. In Washington, John Paul Stevens was sworn in as the 1011th Supreme Court justice after Senate approval 98-0. he is a Chicago judge on the Seventh Circuit.
