Congress moved a 20 billion energy research package toward the White House and neared final approval of a 5.5 billion jobs and benefits program for the unemployed. The measure funds research into geothermal and solar power and was billed as the largest US R and D effort.
Kenneth Parkinson, the final defendant to testify, said he admired former Attorney General John Mitchell highly and could not initially believe his involvement in Watergate. He praised Mitchell as a pinnacle of the legal profession with a warm, friendly demeanor.
The final committee report declares Nelson Rockefeller qualified to be vice president. Plans target Thursday for his confirmation and swearing in. The House will vote Thursday, and the Senate approves TV cameras in its chamber for Rockefeller oath.
Stockholders of Bonded Oil Co Springfield Ohio have agreed in principle to sell all holdings to Marathon Oil Co Findlay Ohio for about 39 million dollars in cash. Marathon will retain Bonded management and employees and keep the corporate headquarters in Springfield.
Cincinnati federal grand jury indicts William B. Jolley 44 former FHA Cincinnati director on one count for knowingly using a materially false financial statement to approve an FHA rehabilitation project sponsored by his son in law Gerald McClanahan.
President Ford led a lively Christmas Ball for departing members of Congress with dancing champagne and jovial remarks. He wore a wine colored jacket with a black tuxedo and joked about his heart being on Capitol Hill while mingling with former House and Senate members.
Rabbi Baruch Korff said at a news conference that Richard Nixon could die if he is not left alone. He cited rising legal bills and a slow fundraising effort by the National Citizens Committee for Fairness to the President and urged suspending civil suits and legal harassment.

UPI Leonard Woodcock of the United Auto Workers warned one million auto and related industry workers could lose jobs next year as profits for GM Ford and Chrysler plunged in the first nine months of 1974. Ford idled 32 500 workers and 18 950 were on indefinite layoff. Woodcock urged tax cuts and extended benefits, blaming recession and calling for congressional action.
Bernard Freeman has his name submitted to the Sixth District Judicial Council for the Common Pleas judgeship in Huron County. The council preparing recommendations for Gov. Gilligan while Robert Smith competes for the Common Pleas post and Vetter retires December 31.
The Year of the Trucker a 28 page book reviewing Norwalk High School football’s march to the state Class AA title was sent to Eberts Inc for printing. Five thousand copies will sell for $2 each with proceeds to Whitney Field Improvement Fund. Fifty one pictures accompany stories on every Trucker game.
Cincinnati report says Senator elect John H Glenn will gain Senate seniority a week before taking office after Senator Metzenbaum agrees to resign December 23. Glenn, a former test pilot and astronaut, seeks seats on Interior and Government Operations and cites energy as a priority.
Washington UPI The Agriculture Department issued a 368 page inflation survival kit in hardcover titled Shopper's Guide It is the 75th annual yearbook in the series Secretary Earl L Butz says the volume helps consumers spot best values when buying food and buy the right product for the best price while not comparing brands
The Senate backed a work bonus plan paying up to 400 dollars a year to families earning four thousand dollars or less. Ten percent of earnings would be paid, tapering to stop above five thousand six hundred. The measure targets welfare desertion and includes paternity testing labs and cooperation requirements.
Israeli helicopter troops crossed into Lebanon and raided an Arab village, while Palestinian guerrillas breached the frontier fence and threw grenades at an Israeli settlement. Israel said six houses were blown up in Majdal Zoun. Lebanon reported four Arabs kidnapped and a child injured.
The General Assembly aims to approve a six percent pay raise for 30 000 UN employees as the United States fights to block the increase. Officials say the raise would cost about 26 million and raise UN pay to 42 6 percent above U S federal workers, with total UN costs around 400 million yearly.
