In Washington the Senate fought over welfare restrictions in the Social Security bill as Congress pressed to adjourn. Lawmakers hoped to finish by Friday or Saturday, with debate to resume at 9 a.m. in an effort to move the measure to a vote.
Selective Service Director Lewis B. Hershey draws liberal outcry in Congress for seeking punishment by induction of student antidraft demonstrators. Eight House liberals demand his resignation as Sen. Edward M Kennedy introduces legislation to ban such use of the draft. Hershey cancels interviews and a TV appearance.
A UPI report states in the 15 largest cities the white unemployment rate is 3.5 percent while nonwhite workers face 7.7 percent joblessness. Labor Secretary Willard Wirtz released the government study on Wednesday.

Norwalk police arrested Marvel Baldridge and Richard Jones in connection with a League Street School break in. Both pleaded innocent at preliminary hearings. bond set at 3000 cash or 6000 property each. they are jailed with a 16 year old boy.
Senator Lausche accused the Office of Economic Opportunity of flooding a Findlay Ohio doctor with propaganda materials sent over two weeks. He noted two unopened items revealed agency praise and a $77 000 Appalachian region allocation. He questioned legality and morality of government workers funding one sided propaganda.
Gary F. Stanley a 31 year old from Sandusky was sentenced to the Ohio Penitentiary after pleading guilty to safe cracking at two Norwalk firms. He received consecutive one to 20 year terms and was linked to recent burglaries including Model Cleaners and Reineck Brothers with stolen items found in his car.
The Norwalk Grassroots group plans a 7 pm gathering at the Recreation Center to hear results of a welfare medical treatment availability survey. Officials warned the data may not be ready in time for tonight's report due to compilation delays.
