Why People Join Cults Says Norwalk Psychologist Leake

Norwalk psychologist Don Leake analyzes why individuals surrender to cult life after Jonestown. He cites democracy and freedom as potentially frightening, driving people to submit to authoritarian leaders who offer security, clear rules, and relief from decision making. Stress from life changes and a lack of heroic models in modern society further push some toward charismatic figures like Jim Jones, whose absolute control shapes group life.
