Dr. Herbert L. Ley Jr. resigned as head of the Food and Drug Administration, denying he was fired. He blamed biased coverage for rumors and said he declined another health post, stressing he eased out rather than was ousted at a Washington news conference.
London doctors said the 23-year-old wife of a computer engineer could give birth to seven babies next February. Mrs Rosemary Letts, already mother of five British quintuplets born last month, is at University Hospital in London. X-rays indicated multiple births.
In North Chatham New York Virginia O Hanlon Douglas now 80 years old is in fair condition at Columbia Memorial Hospital Hudson after decades since the famous Christmas Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus. Patricia Temple says she is doing well and not seriously ill. In Saigon Sgt Vernon C Shepard 21 of Akron Ohio was captured but hopes to be home this weekend after release indications. He and another GI were wounded with moderate malnutrition but fit to return to the United States. In Cleveland a $55000 suit is filed against Duke Sims over a lounge incident in Maple Heights Aug 8. Adrienne Leib alleges permanent scars from a cocktail glass and a subsequent assault and battery charge in Garfield Heights Municipal Court.
The Ohio Education Association empowered its executive committee to endorse a candidate of candidates for governor, breaking a tradition against direct state office endorsements. Delegates at the 47th annual convention approved the resolution after postponing action on the 1970 legislative platform due to workload.
Belkin Productions Inc offered the Beatles up to 4.16 million dollars for a summer United States tour. Roger Abramson said the figure equates to about 6 000 dollars per minute and 360 000 dollars per hour, signaling serious consideration of the bid.

Lorrie Stone, 33, Steubenville, pleaded guilty in Common Pleas Court to forging medical prescriptions to obtain amphetamines. Judge Robert J. Vetter placed her on five years probation and ordered payment of court costs after Norwalk police arrested her for forging two prescription forms and attempting to pass them.

George Deering of Greenwich was elected president of the Huron County Fair Board replacing Anthony Meyer who resigned. Other officers named were Tom Secor as vice president and George Ryerson as secretary treasurer. Dale Ellis won a coin flip for Ripley Township representative after tying with Gene Sparks. The board has verbal confirmation from State Director of Agriculture on a proposed August 18 to 23, 1970 fair dates and will meet Tuesday at 7 30 p.m. to fill remaining posts.
The report on Tricia Nixon's romance with Harvard Law student Edward Cox sparks ire from all sides. Mrs Cox and Mrs Nixon deny opposition to Cox as son in law while Tricia calls gossip private and not uplifting her day.
