Investigators said the Air France jetliner likely suffered mechanical failure not sabotage or hijack as it fell into the sea near Maiquetia. Captain Henry Walter radioed I am losing altitude and cannot control the plane. The Boeing 707 crashed four miles from the airport, exploding in an orange fireball.
United Press International reports snow accumulation ranging from none to 12 inches across northeast Ohio. Middlefield in Geauga County measured 12 inches while Burton area recorded nine inches. Chardon saw four to six inches and Richfield nine to 10 inches. Lake and Ashtabula counties mostly had one to two inches.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced it would retain its existing A and AA divisions after a proposal to create three classifications failed to gather enough votes to change the system.

The House Ways and Means Committee sent a 15 percent across the board Social Security increase to the House floor for likely passage next week. If approved by Congress and attached to tax reform, benefits would rise April for 25 million Americans, with January and February supplements due to computer delays. The minimum would rise from 55 to 63.25 dollars, and average checks for retirees and widows would climb to 115 and 193.20 respectively, funded by a 4.2 billion dollar 12 month boost drawn from trust fund surplus.
Senate Republican Leader Hugh D. Scott and Sen. Howard Baker clash over administration tactics as the GOP fights to push a personal income tax exemption through a Democratic Congress. The body rejected a $750 exemption by 1972, then approved an $800 levy, with Scott claiming Democrats earned the credit.
