Cincinnati Zoo Plans Empty Shrine for Passenger Pigeons
The Cincinnati Zoo will erect an empty display case as a memorial to the extinct passenger pigeon and the Carolina parakeet in 1875 era buildings. Zoo director Ed Maruska says the shrine will warn of endangerment and urge preservation of living species. Wildlife historian John Ruthven notes the pigeons’ once vast numbers and mass killings that led to extinction by 1900.
