Saxbe declines Gilligan TV debates in Ohio race

In Canton, Republican William Saxbe rejected Democrat John Gilligan's call for television debates saying such events offer entertainment but little enlightenment as he campaigns directly to voters in shops and factories. In Montgomery, Wallace attorneys said they will appeal to the U S Supreme Court to place the third party candidate on Ohio’s ballot despite a federal panel ruling allowing write-ins.

Talman dies at 53 former Perry Mason star

William Talman famed as the district attorney on Perry Mason died of lung cancer at age 53. He earned 1500 a week for his courtroom roles and faced CBS dismissal in 1960 after a party arrest before vindication and fan support.

Rioting roams Lima with bands of youths injuring property

Bands of Negro men roamed Lima Ohio for a third night smashing windows and firebombing businesses. Police said six men were arrested five for drunkenness and one for disorderly conduct as about 400 people moved in small groups across the city.

Vermilion Girl Fatally Injured in Route 113 Crash

A 17 year old Vermilion girl, Mary L. Antos, died after a violent crash on Route 113 in Berlinville Erie County. Marilyn K. Billingsley, 16, Vermilion, lost control at high speed and was thrown from the car along with Everett Carter Jr. and Richard Koontz Jr. Others were treated and released.
