Norwalk city solicitor Ronald Freeman was knocked down by a nearby lightning strike while jogging at Memorial Lake Park on Tuesday afternoon. Freeman recalls a loud boom and being unsure what the bolt hit.
Prosecutor William W. Owens says Sheriff John Borgia gave deputies raises of up to 75 a week last year and plans for more next year. He argues deputies deserve higher pay for dangerous duties, while county officials contend federal revenue sharing should fund capital projects rather than operations.

Gamble, a Napa County rancher and P G heir, faced a U S District Court trial after being charged with shipping illegally killed elk and three bighorn sheep. Prosecution exhibits included mounted heads in the jurors box. The defense quipped about animal jurors.
