Entertainer Ted Lewis known for the battered high hat and clarinet died in Manhattan after a brief illness at age 81. The death was reported Wednesday. He was a noted bandleader and singer with a soft voice and distinctive style.
Neil A. Armstrong, first man on the moon, will quit the space program to become a teacher and researcher at the University of Cincinnati. He cited a desire for an academic career and slim chances of another spaceflight as key motives.
The dollar fell further across Europe with Frankfurt dealers noting no end in sight to the decline. In London, faster trading pushed the pound higher against the dollar as the devaluation neared Nixon’s target of a cheaper global dollar.
President Nixon plans to maintain a 10 per cent border tax on imports calling it totally justified despite European threats of a trade war. He worked from the Western White House with fiscal experts aiming to avoid a monetary clash among major trading partners. Press Secretary Ziegler said the tax is valid under the 1947 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

Ohio Air Pollution Control Board ordered statewide emission reductions with regionally graded deadlines. Top Toledo region must cut particulates from 1000 to 50 pounds per hour by July 1, 1973, with all industries reaching 50 pounds by July 1, 1978. Public hearing set for Oct 19-20 before formal adoption.
Ohio teachers who signed contracts before August 15 will receive agreed pay raises after a Cost of Living Council ruling. The Columbus meeting with state officials and district superintendents followed President Nixon era wage freeze concerns and Gov. Gilligan’s austerity program. The NEA estimates nationwide raises affect about 1.5 to 1.6 million teachers.
Julie Nixon Eisenhower suffers a splintered left big toe when a steel cart with 35 books toppled on her foot. Principal Ray Bailey says the injury may end her teaching tenure at Atlantic Beach Elementary. Mrs. Nixon aids her daughter in Atlantic Beach, and doctors report the toe fracture after X rays.
Officials say it is too early to determine if higher Catholic school tuition will shift enrollment to Norwalk public schools. St. Pauls and Norwalk board officials see possible increases after school starts, with pre registration urged for new public students. Frank discussion notes no figures yet and that tuition aid will be provided for those unable to pay.
Organized labor convened its legal advisers to probe possible court actions against the 90 day wage price freeze. The UAW and AFL-CIO pledged cooperation against the administration plan as Senate leaders forecast extended debate upon congressional action.
In Sacramento the California State Fair again turned violent as police clashed with rock throwing youths. At least six patrol cars were damaged and two were overturned as roving bands stirred chaos amid tear gas and fleeing fairgoers.
Nine year old Teri Sue Smith needs 309 more dollars for plane fare to Miami Beach for the Our Little Miss World pageant beginning Sept 4. Her father says 67 local businesses were asked to donate to the Our Little Miss Ohio Fund. only 85 total has come in so far and the family has spent 417 dollars. If money isn’t raised by the weekend the trip may be dropped and Teri Sue would forfeit her crown to Pamela Fiser of Clyde.
