Tomato Strike Threat Endangers Ohio Tomato Crop
United Press International reports up to 1000 migrant farm workers in northwest Ohio planned a strike threatening more than a million tons of tomatoes that could rot on vines within a week. Plant manager Don Simons of Stokely Van Camp Inc. says the strike may not affect their operation as the plant mainly packs lima beans and cabbage for sauerkraut with little field labor. Workers demand wage increases from 2.65 to 3.25 per hour and other benefits for themselves and produce haulers.
