Norwalk police seek two 17 year old teens in an armed robbery at Lawson Store 100 Whittlesey Ave. They fled on foot with about $78 mostly in ones after a redhead and a dark haired youth produced two guns and ordered staff to bag the cash.
UPI reports Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower showed improvement in heart action today. Doctors caution the outlook remains guarded as he continues treatment at Walter Reed Army Hospital and has had a more restful night with fewer irritability signs.
In northeastern Wichita, police exchanged fire with a pinned-down sniper during unrest spanning three days. No injuries reported as the gunfire ended after about ten minutes. A man identified only as a Negro was arrested and taken to police headquarters for questioning.
United Press International reports Ohio endures tropical heat and humidity with highs in the 90s. Morning readings linger in the high 70s as a five day outlook predicts a return to near normal by Sunday night. Temperatures expected to peak again Saturday with northern lows in the lower 80s and southern highs mid 80s through Wednesday.
The Cuyahoga County Grand Jury opened hearings on last month's Glennville Sniper killings where three policemen and seven civilians were killed. It will consider first degree murder charges against three accused snipers.
A 20 year old marine corporal received a heart transplant at Stanford University Medical Center. The 42 hour operation, led by Dr Norman Shumway, marked the world 33rd such transplant with 13 survivors from prior procedures.
Senator Eugene J. McCarthy’s bid for the Democratic nomination stalled as Georgia delegates were blended by a credentials committee, giving both old guard and insurgent groups equal voting power. The platform committee also moved toward a pro administration Vietnam plank amid ongoing tensions and references to Eastern Europe.
Hot humid weather continues with daily thundershowers possible. Norwalk records show Thursday highs near 93 and lows around 73 with light rain totals. Marriage license filings list Galbreath with Seltzer and Short with Westcott. Local births include Holmes Krupp and Wood families.
President Ludvik Svoboda flew to Moscow for top level talks on the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. Back home a national strike and freedom radios denounced the occupiers while Dubcek supporters and foes converged in Prague.
President Johnson aims to meet Soviet Premier Kosygin within 60 days to discuss nuclear disarmament and European issues as Czech developments delay talks. Washington sources say Moscow’s intervention in Czechoslovakia has postponed an announcement but does not end plans for high level talks. Johnson in talks with congressional leaders to set U.S. strategy.
A foot race between Norwalk police and a driver of a stolen car ended with officers losing sight of the suspect who fled from the vehicle after it stopped at Model Cleaners. The car was later traced to Ford W. Harding of Ashland and had been involved in a hit and run on Route 250. The chase began when a trucker reported the vehicle weaving on Route 250 and continued into downtown Norwalk before the driver fled on foot. The suspect was described as a slender 5 foot 10 inch male in dark clothing. police are attempting to identify him.
Two Norwalk residents reported thefts of Chevrolet vehicles overnight. David L. Rollins, 68 Wooster Street, said a dark blue 1963 four door was stolen from in front of his home, while Roberto Aquino of 111% Whittlesey Avenue reported a white 1964 Chevrolet with red interior and a Bowling Green window sticker taken from his garage.
The Soviet Union used its 105th Security Council veto to block a resolution condemning its seizure of Czechoslovakia by force. Ambassador Malik vetoed after a 7 hour 40 minute debate. Canada proposed a new resolution to seek release and safety for arrested Czechoslovak leaders as the council planned to reconvene.
In Da Nang, South Vietnam rangers drove Viet Cong squads from downtown while 200 Red troops attacked Cam Le Bridge three miles southwest. Four Viet Cong were killed and three captured in city fighting as U S Marines reinforced. overall losses described as light.
Ray Riethmiller of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources says restocking the Huron River will wait until next spring. Over 100000 fish died after Buckeye Pipeline workers pierced a gasoline pipeline Aug 7. Riethmiller notes no pollution found yet but fish shortages persist and most species are unavailable. Channel catfish may be stocked soon, others to be stocked next spring.
