Oil slick hits Padre Island beaches amid worsening spill
United Press International reports Texas faces its worst pollution from the Mexican blowout as a 50 mile stretch of Padre Island beaches shows thick oil. Cleanup crews lag while surf tourism officials urge visitors to come at their own risk. Skimmers and buoys keep most shallows uncontaminated but further movement from Bay of Campeche oil persists. Winds shift and threaten additional patches along the coast as agencies work to protect wildlife areas. Ralph Thompson of the South Padre Island tourism bureau says cleanup is hard and speeds are pressured by rising oil.
