Gasoline Leak Endangers Mercer County Town In Underground Tank Spill

Three thousand gallons of gasoline leaked from an underground storage tank into the sewer system in Coldwater Ohio. Fire threats and fumes prompted evacuations of several homes while authorities investigated a few small fires with no injuries or major damage reported.

Senate approves $1.60 minimum wage plan by 1968

The Senate Labor Committee backed a bill to raise the federal minimum wage to 1.60 an hour by 1968 and extend coverage to about 7.2 million workers, including over 6 million in service and retail sectors and nearly 500,000 farm workers for the first time.

Shelby man held on smut charge

A 37 year old Shelby man, Carl F. Bushey, is held in the Huron County jail accused of showing obscene pictures to three North Fairfield boys ages 9 to 12 and offering to sell them. Deputies traced a red car to the suspect, identified him, and found an obscene book in the vehicle after a search warrant.

Former Ohio State University graduate Phillip A. Luce testified before the House Un American Activities Committee about his former Communist Progressive Labor Party. Luce, 29, earned a political science master's at OSU 1958 to 1960 and said he joined the movement on friends’ urging. He described disillusionment after 1964 and claimed the movement is pyramid shaped with hard core Communists at the top and youths at the base.

Burglars Break In Across Rural Huron County

Burglars hit Heisler's Inc Celeryville Road and Forest Lake Park Hanville Corners Road stealing $118.53 from Heisler's, including $103 from a cash register and $15.53 from a box. Arrows and archery targets were taken from Forest Lake Park. Break-in occurred between Saturday night and Tuesday morning. United Fund goal for 1966 67 set at $55 783, up $1 647 from last year with 18 agencies participating including new Mental Health Society budgeted at $283 88. Allocation changes include increases for Red Cross Salvation Army Boy Scouts and others while Health Service and Catholic Youth Organization are reduced. Budget covers admin and campaign costs with contingencies and memberships listed.

Democrats Stop In City Rich Rhodes on Ribbons

Democratic candidates led by William Coleman and James Nolan stopped in Norwalk en route from Sandusky to Medina to tout Rhodes administration programs on education mental health highways and construction. Nolan assailed Rhodes while Coleman said Reams would visit in late Sept or early Oct.

Four Youths Cited In Battery Thefts

Four Willard youths were picked up by Norwalk police early this morning on petty larceny charges. They allegedly took batteries from cars at Fritz Hilltop Gulf Norwood and Benedict Avenues. Police found 19 used batteries in the car trunk. Vernon Hoskins 20 was cited into Mayor's Court. the other three youths 17 17 and 16 were cited into Juvenile Court.

Knox County Plowed Furrows Of Ohio Airport Program

Mt. Vernon residents report the Knox County airport under construction already spurring new industry. The $400000 hilltop facility near Mt. Vernon, funded by state and federal grants, local sources, and revenue bonds, aims for a 4000 foot runway and hangar development with October dedication.
