Trainmen protest rail mail handling cuts nationwide
The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen urged an investigation into Postmaster General Gronouski's plan to cut railroads' mail handling in 70 communities. President Charles una said the move could cost thousands of railroad jobs and cause major postal and regional economic losses. The plan would eliminate 70 gateway terminals in major cities and a House proposal to shift railroad mail to trucks could drain ongoing rail service. The union warned Congress must act to save the industry from decline.
