Voters who wish to cast ballots on November 4 must register due to a decision by the Huron County Board of Elections. Registration opens Thursday at all precincts. Details on how and where to register will be in Wednesday's Reflector.
The U S Army halted its pre trial inquiry into eight Special Forces officers accused of murder. Attorney George Gregory said he met three hours with Maj Thomas E Middleton at Long Binh stockade near Saigon. He cited ongoing legal preparations and a half completed investigation.
An undersea quake near northern Japan and the Kurile Islands generated 41 foot tidal waves but caused no major damage or injuries. Coastal towns evacuated after a Tokyo meteorological warning which was lifted eight and a half hours after the tremor at 6 27 am local time.
Fair tonight with 35 to 60 degree lows and warmer Wednesday highs around 82 to 86. Thursday stays fair and warm. Norwalk high 81 and low 52. Humidity 85 percent at 8 am, 62 percent at 2 pm. No precipitation. Births include a daughter to Mr and Mrs Burton Bowles of Milan. Marriage license applications for Terry Jump and Barbara Stricklin of Willard. Governor Rhodes announced a large scale mosquito spraying plan for nine northeastern Ohio counties. Health Director Arnold calls it a health emergency due to disease carrying mosquitoes, mainly California type encephalitis, with 3 million acres to be sprayed over about 15 days aided by federal funds.
A 13 year old Akron youth killed in Norwalk while driving a car he apparently stole from West Baking Co. Route 18. Jessie Campbell of Akron, an escapee from Maumee Valley Youth Camp, died after the car he used struck a utility pole on Quarry Road near Wellington. The vehicle had been reported stolen from William E. Nestor of Wakeman. Nestor learned of the theft after state patrol contact and later found his car wrecked and demolished. Police linked the death to the Diebert car theft rumor and took fingerprints and photos at Elyria Memorial Hospital.
Frank and Hattie Sties, who divorced in 1951 after 40 years of marriage, remarried at home in Chippewa Falls in a quiet ceremony. He is 82 and she is 83. She cited Bible teachings, saying divorce is wrong, and both spoke of renewed happiness. Eleven lines later, Neil Armstrong reports on Apollo 11 lunar gravity and mission highlights.
Norwalk funeral homes say ambulance costs threaten their finances as rising expenses and unpaid emergency runs force them to subsidize service. Kubach Smith Funeral Home co owner James Smith cites $25 charges and unpaid turns on Ohio Turnpike as reasons to push for a private ambulance system under the county commissioners.
Fire Chief Kenneth Link warns only 16 days remain to buy bicycle registration tags amid a drop in sales by about 300 from last year. About 771 tags have been issued. tags are sold 9 am to 5 pm and require a red rear reflector. Police Chief Lawrence Hilson says tags must be affixed by Sept. 1 and untagged bicycles can’t be ridden.
Norwalk police investigate a Monday night theft on Whittlesey Avenue where Richard J. Jacobs reported his car missing after parking at 11 p.m. He had the keys. In city bids for an aerial fire truck, George Manyak Ford submitted 3 988 for cab and chassis while Mideast Utility Equipment Co. of North Olmsted offered 17 076 for the aerial unit. Mead Motor Sales and the Holan Division of Ohio Brass Co. also bid. Service Director Mount said bids may be awarded later this week.
Oscar Barnett 41 of North Fairfield received five years probation after pleading guilty in Common Pleas Court to shooting with intent to wound. He was arrested Monday for shooting his wife Jean 28 following a domestic argument at their Route 1 North Fairfield home.
At Camp Pendleton California Carlos May of the Chicago White Sox lost the first joint of his right thumb in a mortar cleaning accident. The 21 year old rookie was briefly in satisfactory condition at the base hospital. He had been hitting .281 with 18 homers and 61 RBIs and was a leading candidate for AL rookie of the year.
