Police investigate similarities between the Virginia Lynn Smith killing and seven Michigan murders. Authorities fear a cross country spree by two men may connect the cases as officials review evidence and patterns.
Jackie Gleason is reportedly in love with Beverly McKittick of Miami and plans marriage after divorce from his estranged wife Genevieve. The couple reportedly discussed plans as Gleason seeks finality of his separation from Genevieve, ongoing since 1954.
Edgartown Mass UPI Dist Atty Edmund Dinis awaits official word from District Judge James Boyle to open an inquest into Mary Jo Kopechne’s death after the Kennedy car plunging into a pond on Chappaquiddick Island. Boyle is expected to authorize the inquest today or Wednesday.
Gov. James A. Rhodes flew to Washington as he prepared to meet President Nixon at the White House on the President's request. The purpose of the meeting was not disclosed and Rhodes was to return later the same day.
Space Center Houston reports astronaut Neil Armstrong marked his 39th birthday in quarantine with a plain vanilla cake and 26 candles. Scientists studying lunar rocks continued work on determining the Moon's age and origin.

The Ninth District Coast Guard Station monitored three mile long oil slicks in Lake Erie about 30 miles north of Port Clinton. The slicks likely leaked from an abandoned well by Quillan- Boychuck & Associates of Chatham Ontario. Authorities expect no immediate danger to shores as winds remain light.
Dr. Irwin Oster of Bowling Green State University says plans to seal the science building to allow city mosquito spraying must be discarded. The university collects about 3,000 fruit flies used in genetics studies and obtained a temporary injunction preventing spraying until sealing.
Six people died when a car driven by Robert Burris 21 from Struthers Ohio went the wrong way on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and struck another car near the Beaver Valley interchange. The victims include Burris and his companion Michael Korody both of Struthers and three others from Chicago Oaklawn Indiana. Coroner ordered an inquest into potential alcohol or drug influence amid the bizarre circumstances. The crash occurred near a site of a five year old fatal Turnpike crash. The Illinois couples were returning home from a visit with Mrs McKeague's family in Penn Hills Pittsburgh.
The Ohio House passed a measure 69 to 12 to create counseling services in common pleas courts to order conciliation in divorce actions. Rep. Joseph P. Tulley urged courts should try to save marriages and determine need for counselors in counties.
In Port Clinton Ohio two Cleveland youths Bill Grueger 16 and Mike Weber 15 drowned while swimming across an 80 foot water stretch in Sandusky Bay from Marblehead to Johnson's Island. A sheriff's spokesman cited strong current as the cause.
An estranged spouse may file a petition seeking court help to patch up a marriage during divorce. The case cannot proceed until the court ordered conciliation period expires. Tulley urged the House that the state suffers too many divorces and called the situation deplorable.
The Girl Scouts filed a 1 million dollar libel suit in New York against Personality Posters Mfg. Co. Inc. alleging false representation and defamatory design. They seek 500000 dollars in damages plus 500000 punitive damages, plus an injunction and destruction of all posters.
