Inspector Michael J. Blackwell, known as Sledge Hammer Mike, may retire next July after 40 years and 2541 overtime hours. Chief Gerity told him to use compensatory time prior to mandatory retirement at age 70.

North Fairfield farmer battles frost with helicopter lift

Ralph Walcher of North Fairfield used a helicopter to circulate warm air over 70 acres of peaches and 4 to 5 acres of plums, extending flights from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. The effort followed subfreezing temperatures and comes as fruit growers report mixed yields after several harsh winters. Celeryville growers also sprayed irrigation mist to shield crops.

Kennedy sells stock from Continental Illinois Bank stake

Treasury reports that David M. Kennedy and his wife sold 30 855 shares of Continental Illinois Bank and Trust Co stock worth 1.2 million dollars. Officials say the sale caused a large personal loss as gains tax breaks could not be used.

NEW LONDON The state department of natural resources rejected the proposed upground reservoir project for New London. The town must prove it can finance 255000 for water plus 125000 for a transmission line and about 425000 for a treatment plant before state approval.
