Antrim to move for dismissal of the State of Ohio case against Leon Riley. Meanwhile a Pacific Northwest earthquake shook Seattle Portland and Yakima.

Marines seize positions around Polo Ground in Santo Domingo

U S Marines moved to combat posts around the Polo Ground refugee center in Santo Domingo to shield Americans amid the Dominican Republic uprising. Street fighting raged in the capital as rebel forces held entrenched positions.

Crest of century flood nears crest in Rock Island

The Mississippi flood reached a peak level as Rock Island residents and officials voiced cautious optimism. Mayor Morris E. Muhleman said they may have foiled the river, while Moline Mayor James Arndt cautioned that the river can prevail and noted damage might have been between five and eight million dollars.

Stompers Register Over Seventy For Swamp Stomp Tour

More than 70 adults sign up for the Swamp Stomp event with 72 of 75 places filled by Wednesday noon. Legislation to let municipalities own and develop industrial parks remains in doubt as the reference committee weighs constitutionality. Norwalk Mayor Frey and Rep. Jump drafted the bill to use public tax funds for park financing, with potential amendments before further referrals.

Bellevue man drowned after homemade boat capsized

Donald Vaughn Canode 28 of Bellevue, father of three, drowned in the Bellevue Reservoir near Route 547 when a small plywood boat overturned as he moved a tackle box. William Whaley 25 survived, others aided by Norwalk and Belle Vue crews. Canode's death was ruled accidental drowning. He formerly ran a Dairy Queen and worked for oil and service firms. He leaves wife Cora and children Pamela Sue Donald and Matthew. Funeral services planned at St. Pauls United Church of Christ.

Woman Serious Injury From Wreck In Norwalk

Mrs. Berlynn M Breternitz 51 of 25 Welton was hospitalized after a crash at Elm and Benedict. Her car was struck by a semitrailer driven by Elwood J Dyer 33. Police say Dyer failed to yield and Breternitz was taken to Elyria Memorial for a skull fracture. Her husband Robert Breternitz died March 28 of a heart attack.

Veteran driver dies in Route 20 crash near Norwalk

Earl Thomas age 41 of Mansfield was killed in a two truck crash on Route 20 at 4 15 a m. His rig struck the rear of a parked truck driven by John R Crouch of Ferndale who slept in the cab. Thomas was ejected and burned when a fire followed the collision. Crouch was uninjured and his rig was legally parked. An autopsy in Fremont sought to determine burns or trauma as the cause.

Fire destroys three unit building in Norwalk

A fire at 144 East Main in Norwalk forced eleven people from their homes, including five children under ten. The Hall family occupied the second floor rear unit and suffered heavy kitchen damage while smoke and water affected the others. Fire Chief Kenneth Link estimated damages over a couple thousand dollars.
