Early Richmond Marsh Shaped Richmond Township History

Settlers arrived as early as 1810s in Richmond and New Haven where a vast marsh, later drained, supported hay harvesting and a cranberry cash crop. The area, part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, hosted rattlesnakes and roosting passenger pigeons, once forcing locals to hunt at night for sustenance. The marsh’s reclamation by Hollanders around Celeryville transformed sparse wetlands into productive farmland.

The text recalls postwar marsh perils, searches for Charles Thompson, repeated fires in reclaimed mucklands, and 1855 survey work by Eli Mesnard and Horace Martin establishing points near Base Line Road and Morehead's Point where Jedediah Morehead hunted and many travelers found refuge.
