Temperance Capsule Opened Amid San Francisco Rains
In North Beach San Francisco a 100 year old time capsule from temperance advocate Dr. Henry D. Cogswell was opened beside the Benjamin Franklin statue in Washington Square. City Archivist Gladys Hansen hoped for surprises as workers freed a lead box containing Harpers magazines, a calendar, a fashion book, almanac, poems, city laws and a bottle of cabernet Sauvignon was notably absent. The event drew about 300 umbrellas in the drizzle as Henry Neidermeier sang Cogswell’s favorite hymn.
