Forsch Owns First No-Hitter In 54 Years For Cardinals
Bob Forsch pitched St Louis to a no hitter the first for the team since 1971 amid doubt over an eighth inning ruling that an error credited to Ken Reitz spared a potential hit Phillies baserunner Garry Maddox led off the frame with a sharp smash that skipped past Reitz. Reitz and manager Vern Rapp defended the call while Phillies skipper Danny Ozark argued for a hit. Forsch improved to 3-0 while the Cardinals built a lead with Reitz’s fourth inning single and a sixth inning two-run double by Roger Freed. The day’s NL results included Dodgers over Braves 8-0 and Giants past Padres 8-4 with Willie McCovey homering to move to 12th on the all-time list.
