In Tallahassee Florida votes 21 19 against the Equal Rights Amendment marking a setback for the national effort to reach the required three state ratifications before the 1979 deadline. White House pressure fails to change odds as additional state actions loom with only months remaining until March 22 1979.
FDA announces a ban on saccharin in foods drugs and cosmetics covering about 90 percent of current uses but permits sales as a nonprescription home use drug. Commissioner Donald Kennedy cites cancer risk and rising cancer stats to justify action.
In a skeleton session the Ohio House minority leaders proposed using state lottery and personal income tax revenues for education and property tax relief. They cited Taxation Department figures showing income tax at 511 million and lottery at 47 million in fiscal 1976, with no immediate boost to school aid since current state support already exceeds these revenues.
Amesbury Massachusetts school committee votes to drop the word fighting from the Fighting Indians nickname for the high school teams citing violence connotations. J Brian Butler led the motion citing shifting attitudes toward the word.
The White House grounds face a tough spring with sick elm and maple trees despite efforts by chief horticulturist Irwin Williams. Separately, Sen. Norwalk merchants opposed to up to 2.4 million in municipal bonds for a 46 000 square foot shopping plaza west of Cline Street and Milan Avenue voiced concerns at a Wednesday meeting. Developer Owen Lavelle argued the project would create about 250 local jobs and bring free parking, while merchants questioned tax breaks and real estate impacts.
The White House announced President Carter has dropped the $50 tax rebate for all Americans from his $31 billion stimulus package and will withdraw the proposed $2 billion investment tax credit for industry. Press Secretary Jody Powell said Carter could not withdraw the rebate while granting industry a tax break.
