County firemen learn radiation detection training
Huron County fire departments will study radiation detection next month with a 16 hour Geiger counter course funded and maintained by state disaster officials. Willard and Huron County Disaster Center already own counters. Firemen also attend a June 9 hazardous materials seminar at Willard hosted by Chessie System with instructor David Frank. Tornado preparedness briefings were provided by the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

Ohio farmers eligible for water quality grants
Under an Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service program farmers in Seneca Crawford and Huron counties may apply for 65,000 in grants to improve water quality in the Honey Creek watershed feeding Lake Erie. Grants cover 80 percent federal funds and 20 percent participant share and fund conservation tillage seedings animal waste facilities and pasture improvement. Senators John Glenn and Howard Metzenbaum announce the program.

Grand jury indicts Strader for jail fire
A Huron County grand jury returned 13 indictments from aggravated arson to intimidating a public official. Robert Strader of Berlin Heights was secretly indicted for aggravated arson after allegedly setting a mattress on fire in the Huron County Jail Monday night. Strader pleaded innocent and a pre trial conference is set for May 11. He was transported to the Ohio State Reformatory after arraignment. Two other men face charges in theft cases from Greenwich and Bellevue. One man faces an intimidation charge against a South Central High School principal. Additional indictments include breaking and entering and vehicle theft related to a Pontiac Trans Am recovered from Billy Inmon Ford.
