A dormitory housing outstanding students at Cornell University in Ithaca NY burned early today killing eight students and one faculty member. About 12 others were injured with four students hospitalized in satisfactory condition. Names withheld pending relatives notification.
The motion picture cameramen's union Local 644 voted unanimously to ask president Richard F. Walsh to authorize an immediate strike in support of AFTRA. The aim is to cripple the nation’s three major broadcasting networks in sympathy with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
A UPI survey shows The Death of a President by William Manchester as the center of a national price war with many stores in Washington New York Boston Chicago Dallas and Seattle cutting the $10 list price. Others in San Francisco Pittsburgh and Atlanta keep the price at $10 as sales hold steady.
Governor James A. Rhodes proposes a 100 million capital improvement package for Ohio financed by a new Bond Commission to fund parks waterways and seven family lodges plus 600 cabins with a May 2 vote set in the General Assembly. King urges U S ceasefire in Vietnam calling war a tragedy and asks conscience objectors and white allies to boycott military service.
Minority Democrats in Colorado propose a ban on bawdy houses gambling houses and Republican meetings in Blackhawk. Republicans counter with a substitute replacing Republican with Democrat, both versions fail in vote.
President Johnson plans to address Congress with a budget message proposing federal pay increases and a penny raise in postage. The plan would raise regular letter postage from 5 to 6 cents and airmail from 8 to 9 cents.
Senator Frank Moss of Utah said the GAO found kickbacks schedule padding and other dishonest practices by some physicians and pharmacies serving Cleveland nursing home patients and welfare cases. The report covers a 1966 study done at Moss's request.
The Russians are pursuing a pathway to win release for a Soviet citizen serving 20 years in a U S prison for espionage. The State Department issued sharper warnings for American tourists in Russia to heed local regulations and avoid trouble.

Dairymen in Huron County resume shipping milk marking end of a hold action that limited deliveries. Howard Cummings says Phase II aims to route milk to processing plants for cheese dried milk and butter to relieve price pressure. Negotiations with large dairies and a planned regional plant are under way to convert fluid milk to value added products.
Mayor Clayton C. Lord proposed to ask the Monroeville Board of Education to contribute 500 annually for high school athletics use of Marsh Field. Maintenance and new field lights are city funded. Council noted the district serves a larger area, so costs should be shared by the area, retroactive to Jan 1 1967.
The Monroeville village council voted to buy a fire truck and renew the fire protection contract with five townships. The $27,879 purchase will be shared by Lyme Peru Ridgefield Sherman and the village, with Monroeville paying $4,646. The one year contract extension was approved Tuesday night.
Red Cross director Clarence Luce urged donations at the Norwalk office for the Lykins family of rural Peru after their Monday afternoon house fire. Harold Kamann said the loss totaled seven to eight thousand dollars. the family escaped unharmed. Donations of money or clothes can be dropped off at the Huron County Red Cross office.
Gov. James A. Rhodes will visit Norwalk next Wednesday and address 200 business leaders at a noon luncheon in Ellis Country Club. The luncheon is part of a Lorain Erie and Huron county tour to promote industrial development and will be followed by a bus trip leaving Norwalk around 2 p.m.
The second annual Career Night for city high school students is set for Thursday at Norwalk High. Norwalk and St. Pauls students attend two sessions at 7:30 and 8:15 p.m. with 18 speakers across 18 occupations including aviation engineering law enforcement and nursing.
The proposal to merge Lyme School District with Bellevue City School District was filed with the Huron County Board of Elections on Tuesday. The resolution, adopted by the county board Saturday night, sets the measure to appear on the November 7 ballot. Superintendent Ralph Brown, who is the board clerk, filed the documentation.
