Two American troops who were AWOL for a month in Sweden surrendered to US Army authorities in Germany. They arrived at Frankfurt airport shortly after Pvt. Ray Roy Jones was sentenced to four months hard labor for leaving his unit and living in Sweden for over a year.
New London Ohio reports Rodney Ward 55 president of C.E. Ward Co. died when his Porsche struck a Penn Central train at Route 250 crossing. Train 50 mph, car thrown 75 feet, Ward not belted, pronounced dead at Fisher Titus Memorial Hospital. Survived by wife Alice Ruth two sons Tom and David and two sisters. World War II veteran.
Vice President Hubert Humphrey, buoyed by White House talks and solid backing from key figures, nears an open bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. President Johnson plans a Hawaii trip to discuss Vietnam peace moves with Saigon officials and Park Chung Hee.
Norwalk Municipal Light Plant improvements are over eight months behind due to strikes and delays in equipment and materials. Service Director Morley Price hopes for a June 1 finish while a previous target was April 1. Mayor Harold Finch plans a cost study after new equipment is in operation to determine possible rate reductions for city electricity customers.
Mike Cassidy, suspected by some of killing his parents, underwent a lie detector test at Toledo Police. Prosecutor George Steinemann said results did not prove innocence or guilt. Cassidy will live with grandmother Dorothey Hahn in Ruggles Beach while finishing Milan High School. Pattie Cassidy remains in critical condition after being beaten. Mike found his parents dead Monday morning after returning from work.
Saigon reports Bill Blunt a 20 year old marine from Youngstown Ohio led a lead jeep as allied troops moved to within three miles of the besieged outpost at Khe Sanh The reinforcements aim to crush North Vietnamese forces besieging Khe Sanh since January 21 His mother Mary Blunt called him a “little rascal.”
Patrolman Wendell W. Webb of the Springfield Post received the O W Merrell Meritorious Service Award for uncovering that the death of a small child resulted from gunshot wounds not an auto crash. The award was presented by O W Merrell at the Highway Patrol Academy in Columbus.
Michael Richards, 6, was killed in Wilmington when he pushed his dog off the tracks of the Boston & Maine Railroad as a diesel train approached. He could not escape in time, despite hearing the horn and trying to move.
