Unemployment rate falls to 7.5 percent in March

Griffin reading consultant pay sparks voter poll

The Ohio Department of Education hired Archie Griffin as a read in consultant at 125 a day to promote reading. Voters split 70.9 percent against and 29.1 percent for the idea with comments on value and teaching. A separate note reports Judge Robert Smith naming a 19 year old woman director of the bureau of support with a 9000 salary.

Gunfire Hits Four Trucks Amid Ohio Strike Turmoil

Four trucks were struck by gunfire on day two of a national Teamsters strike in Ohio. In Toledo a driver was injured by flying glass from a high powered rifle. A fourth shooting occurred on Interstate 75 in Cincinnati hitting a windshield.

Court Dismisses Warner's Appeal In Contempt Case

The Sixth District Court of Appeals dismissed John L. Warner's contempt appeal, ruling there was no final order or judgment. Prosecutor William Owens called it a victory, while attorney Frederick Waugh noted the decision leaves Warner not formally journalized as in contempt. The case, tied to Warner's witness stand address to an undercover drug unit, will return to Common Pleas Court with costs assigned.

Businessman Decorates Office With An Early Caboose

Norwalk real estate dealer Bud Brady has furnished his new office inside an old caboose attached to Brady Realty at 3 Railroad St. He bought and refitted the car, connecting it to The Depot with a seven foot walkway. The caboose includes a stove, sink, beds, and a desk, with railroad lanterns and a calendar signed by crewmen. Brady, 55, has seven years in real estate and invested about 7500 dollars in the car.

No Smoking Areas Set In Ohio Public Buildings

The Ohio Senate approved a no smoking areas bill 25 to 7, requiring designated non smoking zones in theaters classrooms elevators hospital rooms government and university buildings public transport and any building over 50 occupants. Exemptions include restaurants taverns and bowling alleys. Violations carry fines up to 100 dollars and enforcement falls to the fire marshal or building owner.
