Hard duty for police breaking tragic news to families
Norwalk police chief Lawrence Hilson and sheriff’s deputies detail the emotionally demanding task of informing relatives when a loved one is killed. Officials note no formal policy exists, and officers rely on empathy, brief explanation, and accompaniment by a supervisor or neighbor, often with hospital staff signaling the news first. They stay with the family after the briefing and avoid handling it by phone whenever possible.
