Hospitals Claim Continuous Doctor Coverage In Emergencies

A survey of area hospitals finds full time physician coverage in ERs, countering claims of on call doctors. West Suburban and St. Anne’s report 24 hour staffing with on call specialists. Walther Memorial and Loretto run full time ERs with salaried and rotating doctors. Garfield Park relies on a volunteer medical staff around the clock, while payment policies vary with on site treatment and later bills.

Suspect Plastic In Second Baby Smothering Case

An 11 week old boy, Daniel M Rieger Jr, was found smothered in his crib with a plastic mattress cover at noon August 27 in the Kedzie home. The father said he had checked the infant earlier and he was well. Police report this is the second similar case in recent weeks.

City orders demolition of hazardous open basement home

The City Dept of Buildings began a no holds barred effort to demolish the unfinished brick ranch at 2117 N Tripp after neighbors complained to the Northwest Journal. Builders John Mylander started work 18 months ago and halted six to eight months later leaving a roofless, water filled basement and damaged sidewalk. Law department will receive the case for court action.

Catholic Schools Have No Quota

The Archdiocese of Chicago denies any racial quota system in Catholic schools though aims for racial balance in high schools are discussed. Open enrollment aims to mix students across parochial schools, while elementary schools remain parish based. Cardinal Cody’s quoted quota remark was denied as a misunderstanding. Over 8,000 non Catholics attend Catholic schools, including many Negro students.

Redmond Report Targets Area Vocational Schools

The Redmond report analyzes 10 Chicago vocational high schools including Prosser Flower Westinghouse and Cregier. It urges open enrollment city wide, stronger recruitment, curriculum reform and better follow up on graduates to align programs with modern job markets.
