A local publications carrier boy may win a new bicycle for six months. The top newsboy earns the prize by turning in collections on time and gaining subscribers. Readers are urged to pay their carrier promptly to help him accumulate points and avoid late collections.
Representative Frank Annunzio reports that Vietnam era and older veterans and dependents in his district will receive about 670940 in VA benefits over the next 12 months. The increase comes from the new G I Bill provisions signed by President Johnson, including a cost of living pension rise and expanded educational and readjustment aid for thousands of eligible veterans and dependents.
Pvt. Robert Lange son of Mrs Lorraine Scanlon 1736 N Fairfield has completed two weeks of training at Camp Pendleton California in day and night patrolling infantry weapons survival and assault tactics. He will undergo advanced training before assignment to his permanent unit.
Detective Thomas Reilly of the Area 5 general assignments unit at Shakespeare Police Station received the Superintendent's Award of Valor, the department's second highest bravery honor. He foiled a 1:30 a.m. Sept 10 gas station robbery at Chicago and Kedzie by capturing two suspects and killing a third who threatened the attendant with a gun, after observing three men casing the station and moving the attendant to a rear room.
Logan Square YMCA launches a door to door weekend drive on November 4 and 5 to raise 50000 for a 500000 addition and indoor pool. Chairman John G. Symons says the goal is 1 per family with 100000 already raised and 600 volunteers recruited by Mrs. Carlotta Jonas.
West-Northwest Side lawmen link rising crime to public apathy during Law Enforcement week. Cmdr. Thanasouras urges citizens to report suspicious acts via PO 5-1313, noting many crimes are committed by youths under 21. He stresses community cooperation to curb juvenile crime and move toward safer neighborhoods.
George Perez reported noises at 3 30 am on October 24 at 2712 North his gift shop where a rear wall had been chopped. Police nabbed Juan Rodriguez and three others near 2727 Wabansia with tools stained by plaster and paint. Arrestees face attempted burglary and burglary tools charges. arraignment delayed for crime lab work.
Sp 4 James M. McCormick of Austin High School and Sp 4 David W. Fisher of the 25th Army Division were killed in Vietnam. McCormick’s burial followed a homecoming in Chicago after a long family ordeal, while Fisher died leading a patrol and will be buried at Irving Park Cemetery after services at Emmaus Methodist Church.
The West Metropolitan Area Council proposes a two-highway Crosstown with a northbound Pulaski route and a southbound path east of Belt Line. The plan includes a Midway to Kennedy Expressway corridor with an industrial park between routes and separate truck and passenger lanes.
The North Crawford chamber of commerce moved its Nov 9 meeting to tomorrow at 1 p.m. The session will take place at the American Home Saving and Loan Association.
