A veteran Illinois legislator recounts a dangerous prank by younger members during a six month session. At a hotel gathering the new rep is lured into a staged confrontation with two lobbyists and a staged stabbing. A dummy police witness helps him escape blame, but the night leaves him humiliated and wiser.
The Chicago Motor club lists deductible automobile costs for tax time. Deductions include state gasoline taxes, casualty losses, interest on auto loans, personal property tax, and sales taxes on autos, parts, and repairs. The IRS tables help compute sales tax deductions. if not using them, note rate changes in Illinois and localities. For business use, many costs are deductible, and a standard mileage rate may apply for qualifying cases. Parking and tolls can be added when using the rate, and multiple cars can be combined for the deduction. Home-to-work driving is not deductible.
An 8 p.m. prayer service for Christian unity among Austin denominations is planned at Austin Messiah Lutheran Church. The Bible service will feature hymns readings and common prayer with attendance urged by Rev. James R. McAllister of Klockner Memorial UCC. The event is part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity sponsored by the Austin Clergy Council.
