A young man from Palestine learning American ways is chosen as Community Publications Carrier Boy of the Week. Victor Samann, an eighth grade student at Howe school, 739 N Leamington, is praised for prompt delivery, good collections, and overall excellence. He enjoys soccer and baseball.
Readers submit civic complaints about abandoned cars at 523 N Central Park and near Central Park and Franklin. Willie directs calls to PO 5-1313 for towing and safety, and shares a success story about resolving a non delivery issue with a door to door salesman. A hydrant leak near Central Park and Ohio is reported with water damage and a potential trip hazard.
West-Northwest Side singers join Apollo Musical Club for Handel's Messiah performances in Orchestra Hall marking the club's 97th season. Conductor Dr William J Peterman leads the group with soloists from local and visiting musical circles. Participants include Dave Barcena William Benedict Rachel Buck Val Camullett Rev Robert C Cannon and William Hart.
A Bible lesson sermon titled God the Only Cause and Creator based on a passage from Isaiah will be read December 8 in the 15th Church of Christ, Scientist at 301 North Central. The service starts at 10 45 a.m.
A 1958 Our Lady of the Angels school disaster in Chicago left 92 children and three nuns dead. The memory lingered as crowds gathered for the 10th memorial mass at Our Lady of the Angels church. Bishop William F. McManus led the service.
Edmund J. Kucharski states Harold Gangler remains the 31st ward Republican committeeman elected June 14. Gangler disputes firing from the county treasurer’s office and says he quit that job to focus on real estate and insurance. He has held the post since 1964 and was re elected in June.
The North Avenue Crawford Chamber of Commerce will meet December 5 at 12 30 p m in the new American Home Savings quarters at 4054 North. Recording secretary John Ogurek notes the event. Bob Williams, president, promises refreshments as the group also announces holiday store hours. Christmas hours run December 9 through 23 with regular Saturday hours and December 24. The stores stay open Sundays December 15 and 22.
Dennis Flanagan leads dry land ski lessons for the Milton Gustafson family as Chicago Park District launches its ski program at Riis Park starting Dec 4 at 7 30 p m The course runs on land December 4 7 11 and 18 then moves to on the hill January 8 15 and 22 with a novice meet on January 25 at Riis Park.
Mrs. Evelyn Wurtz asks for information leading to the hit and run driver who struck her car at Leclaire and Crystal on November 25. The 1962 or 1963 light blue Cadillac sped away after impact as witnesses described. she and her son were treated and released. Call 6264637 with tips.
Bethel No 21 of the International Order of Job's Daughters will hold its semi annual installation of officers on December 9 at 7 30 p.m. at the Kelvyn Park Masonic Temple. Officers to be installed include Christine Hopper honored queen Carol Gauger Janice Repinske senior and junior princesses and a full slate of captains judges and messengers. The ceremony will be conducted by installing officers Jennifer Underwood Sharon Schweizer Judith Birns and others with Lorraine Menz as escort.
Plan United Services For The Elderly gathers seniors 62 and older at Parkview Senior Center to form a welfare organization pooling resources. A public meeting is set for Dec 11 at 6 pm in Hamlin House to recruit interested volunteers and discuss goals. Call Mary Tanksley or Doris Sporleder for details.
