Attempted Blackmail Case Linked to Hunt and Bellamy
John Howard Hunt and Rufus Edwin Bellamy were arraigned before Judge Baldwin on a charge of attempting to blackmail M. R. Magnussen. The defendants, workers for Magnussen who raised a 300 dollar watermelon crop, are held on a strong statute that carries one to three years. The notice demanded 300 dollars by Tuesday evening and threatened an undertaker’s visit if not paid. Magnussen treated it as a bluff and had them arrested.
