The 1922 Lincoln County Progressive Fair opens with paid admission and free schoolchildren day tomorrow. A big fireworks display, animal exhibits, and varied entertainment dominate the program. Dodge cars change hands to local buyers as the fair runs through Friday night.
The H. & S. Agency at 610 Locust Street held a brilliant reception with over eighteen hundred attendees. The decorated new quarters featured flowers from state firms. A receiving line hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hollman and Mr. and Mrs. James E. Sebastian greeted guests. Notable out of town visitors included T. A. Phillips of Minnesota Mutual Insurance and other state and national insurance executives. Gifts to attendees and balloons added festive cheer.
The Committee of One Hundred declares the Volstead law has withstood court challenges and warns that liquor interests seek a congress to modify the law by permitting light wines and beer. Lincoln county dry forces form an organization of legal voters led by staunch prohibitionists to oppose this movement in the fall campaign.
A community notice urges residents to clip sign and mail a petition supporting rigid liquor law enforcement and opposing changes to legalize light wines and beers under the Volstead act. The form invites supporters to send it to A. S. Gregg, chairman, North Platte, Nebraska.
A series of short items notes business visits by A B Hawley Hershey L W Roth Dickens and Misa Velma House Cozad plus births and travel. A son born to Mr and Mrs William Huxen and Pearl Hunter return from Hastings while Mia Geo Gibbs Mrs Carl Brodbeck and Hazel Simpson head to York for the American Legion auxiliary convention. Elmer Hastings and Gerald Decker fined for speeding and Alvin Claude Weingand leave for Boulder to attend school as others travel over the weekend. Funeral for John C Todd held with B of R T in charge and burial at local cemetery.
Sunday noon Sheriff Salisbury raided a house in the 2200 block between west third and fourth streets and found about 500 gallons of mash and nearly two gallons of booze with two stills. Charles Shaffer held the key and was jailed awaiting a hearing. The house, owned by John Wilken and leased to others, had been raided weeks earlier with nothing found.
The Yeoman home site committee arrives this afternoon by special car on the fast mail train. Local civic and commercial representatives greet them. They dine with Rotary tonight and tour potential sites tomorrow. Noon hosts Kiwanis luncheon and a Union Pacific dining room dinner with both committees present.
The Woman's Club production of All Aboard selects principal cast with Billy played by John Ritner and Johnny Grady by Donald Russell. Marguerite Campbell Beatrice Sloan Mrs Sloan played by W J Tiley Dorothy played by Mary Ellaworth Captain Kidd by Perry Buchanan. Adult ship crew includes Ralph Shango as Alexander Phone Harry Pizer and Denver Wilson as sailors. Performance at the Keith September 28 29 tickets at Rexall Drug Store. Burton M Fisher and Leafy F Clark wed Saturday in Moorefield with Judge Woodhurst officiating.
Rev and Mrs Hugh Hollingsworth visiting from California. Garcia fined for stealing at Star Clothing Co and jailed for inability to pay. South Locust street paving work begins with tractor and dirt loader preparing concrete base. Divorce filing by Mrs Fern Whiting against Richard Whiting for cruelty and desertion. Parolee Loren Boring linked to grand larceny and clothes theft. parole cancelled. Miss Alice M Andrew to chair fourth fifth grade at Lincoln school. Miss Georgina McKay to handle first grade. Firemen Carnival Friday to raise funds for state Volunteer Firemen convention in January.
The North Platte Ladies' Band drew a large summer crowd with a free concert in the courthouse square. Directed by Fart Stamp the ensemble wore attractive uniforms and played a varied program highlighted by a cornet duet by Mrs Stoffregen and Miss Schwaiger. Frank Turpie sang Smilin Through and When Shall We Meet Again. The band received praise for its progress and fine work.
The North Platte Woman's club sponsors the musical comedy All Aboard on the 8. 8. Florida, with the plot about two college boys both loving the same girl and a sequence of jokes sparked by a football loss of four teeth. Margaret A. McConnell is named principal of Lincoln grade school, hailed for qualifications and service. B. H. Morey reports state highway vehicle counts from eighteen sites noting Sundays as peak travel, with 4900 total vehicles west of North Platte on the Lincoln Highway in a week.
At a board meeting, Superintendent Braham reported city school enrollment up by 160 from last year. One room houses nearly eighty pupils. the Junior and Senior High schools are crowded, with the main assembly seating about 160 but housing around 280. Washington and Baker schools are near capacity as North Platte grows, with new houses rising and demand for more buildings and grounds. The board plans temporary fixes and urges a formal building program to meet increasing student loads.
The Bignell community held a successful Pall Festival with fair weather and a partly cloudy sky. North Platte Maxwell and nearby rural residents attended, exhibits topped last year, and crowds praised local effort despite the main speaker's absence. Duck season opened with hunting parties reporting varied luck, including a two‑man party taking about 100 ducks over two days. Mr and Mrs BE Plummer planned a several month visit near Bradshaw while Miss Esther Schwaiger and her sister prepared to study at Columbia University in New York City with a Washington, D C stop en route.
