Memorial Day exercises proceed with cemetery decorations and G A R service for Major Walker. Local notices report numerous residents traveling to Omaha and Beatrice for family visits and health matters, plus religious and civic events at churches, schools, and communities.
The local Methodist church plans a week of events with Rev Dr Tiff from Denver arriving after the general conference in Saratoga New York He will speak at a Thursday officers meeting a Friday luncheon for Methodists and friends and a Sunday 10 oclock sermon The church hopes for a crowded turnout A memorial service at the Keith Sunday evening drew many including G A R and W R C members with Rev White of the Presbyterian church delivering a patriotic sermon and a male quartet providing music
Sheriff Salisbury ended a six months manhunt by arresting Robert Parmalee in Jacksonville Florida on a $2000 supreme court bond for 1915 indecent relations with a girl under eighteen. Parmalee, who escaped after his North Platte trial, confessed and spoke of hard times including a bread-only stretch and roasting a chicken for meals. Bondsmen had posted a $350 reward.
Chaney Johnston and Leo Fountain clashed last evening in front of the First National Bank. Johnston was wounded by a knife slash on the right cheek severing a main artery. Dr. Wurtele stopped the bleed. Fountain, a Union Pacific brakeman, was arrested. Johnston’s injury is serious but not expected to be life threatening.
A large crowd is expected at McPherson National Cemetery for Memorial Day exercises. North Platte attendees will arrive in at least fifty cars, with many visitors from within thirty to forty miles. A splendid program has been prepared for the day.
The B I L Brotherhood of Chapter AK held a Monday evening banquet at Hotel McCabe for PEO wives and sisters. About forty guests attended a formal eight course dinner with marguerite decor and candles. Toasts from Judge Grimes Butler Buchanan Joseph Reeler ae Voorhees Lukas and Mrs P J Barron honored guests before the group sang a closing hymn.
Transportation magnate James J. Hil, renowned railroad builder and western figure, died at his St Paul residence yesterday forenoon. He was born near Guelph Ontario in 1838. The report notes his prominence as a cap italist and public figure in western rail development.
H M Bushnell of the Lincoln Trade Review spoke for thirty minutes at the Union Cafe luncheon attended by about forty Cham ber of Commerce members. He noted Nebraska had four hundred commercial clubs now versus thirteen years ago and urged unity to meet changing business conditions.
Sealed bids due by noon Saturday June 24 for sale of a two story brick building at Willow and Fourth streets. Successful bidder must remove the structure and leave the lot clean. The Twentieth Century club will meet at Chamber of Commerce rooms Tuesday evening June 5 with an informal reception for Miss Annie Kramph retiring president and Mrs J H Hegarty president elect. Invitation extended to ladies joining the new music and social department.
Help needed by Mrs. T. C. Patterson at 516 West Fourth Street for general housework duties.
The First National Bank moved to temporary quarters two doors north of its former building. Moving the safe, vault, frame and counters began at six Sunday morning and finished by 11 30 that night with T M Cohagen and several assistants. Bids for the exterior work and rough interior plastering were opened today.
The Tribune reports T. F. Healey of this city has been offered the state dairy inspector job by Governor Morehead. Healey plans to travel to Lincoln tonight to learn duties and pay before deciding on acceptance. Dr. Fenner and Attorney Oberst form a sixteen member boys scout club inviting boys aged twelve to eighteen to join and hike to the new Colin Highway Bridge.
