Union Pacific plans a major upgrade at its terminal including a 16 inch main from the North Platte river to a 600000 gallon elevated tank, powered by electric pumps from North Platte Light and Power Co. A concrete settling basin and river works will be built, with work starting only after all materials arrive to prevent delays.
Demand for war bonds is growing at the First National Bank as local residents subscribe daily. Subscriptions include $1,000 bonds and smaller denominations, with the bank itself already subscribing for $10,000. The bonds pay 4 3/4 percent interest and are non taxable, effectively yielding about five percent.
The Cham ber of Commerce board elected J Q Wilcox as president for the coming year with M J Forbes as vice president Albert Durbin secretary and J VanDerhoof treasurer. The secretary will be paid 160 monthly including use of a car. A road program and a publicity fund were set, plus a 35 appropriation to aid high school cadets at Curtis Lake encampment.
The last legislature amended the motor vehicle law requiring public garages to keep a record of all license and engine numbers for cars in storage or repair. The record must include owner and keeper names and addresses. Alteration of an engine number is prima facie evidence of larceny and garages must notify the sheriff for car retention until investigation. The record is not required when a car is taken into a garage a second time.
Co E near head ranks second in the Fifth regiment with 105 enlisted men, while Co FE has 102 and other companies range from 38 to 83. Captain Halligan and his unit are credited for their success in obtaining enlistments.
Fidelity Reserve Company seeks two Solicitors of Insurance to operate from its Home office in the city and an agent for county work with a car. Inquiries at Rooms 1 and 2 I, Co. O. F. Building. Secretary Durbin plans a good roads day on the Lincoln Highway between North Platte and Gannett to raise tractors teams and day labor before June first.
A 1917 graduating class in North Platte will receive diplomas next Wednesday evening at Franklin Auditorium after a week of events. The Senior Class Play, Junior-Senior Banquet, and Graduation Sermon at the Lutheran church precede the ceremony. Principal speakers include class president, valedictorian, historian, and class prophet with Byron Oberst addressing alumni. Memorial Sunday and community notices follow.

North Platte in 1917 proclaims Memorial Day with a full five part program. Citizens urged to observe May 30 by visiting graves and placing flowers. Activities include cemetery decorating, flag ceremony, and a Franklin School auditorium program with speakers and songs.
A Red Cross tent chapter held a Tuesday meeting and started an active membership campaign, adding 107 new members in under two hours. The drive aims for 500 city members and substantial county growth, with War Department backing as a key women's effort. The Woman's Relief Corps presented a flag to Franklin School during a ceremony with speeches and readings.
