Bridge Club entertained by Fern and Flo Stamp

The Bridge Club is hosted this evening by Fern and Flo Stamp. Also noted are a string of local items including marriages, civic meetings, theater, and community updates from North Platte and surrounding areas.

Rail fatalities drop in 1908 study marks hopeful trend

Slawson Thompson reports from the bureau of railway news and statistics based on Interstate Commerce Commission data that 1908 saw 1 92 fewer railway passenger and employee fatalities than 1907. The year 1908 also shows a 43 4 percent drop versus 1906 7, with passenger deaths down 48 8 percent and employee fatalities down 43 percent, noting panic layoffs reduced staff by 15 percent.

North River branch links stations and main line

The North River branch now connects with the main line allowing same accommodations. In two weeks about 1000 cars of sand from the ice lake east of town were shipped to stations east and west. Weingand reports 17000 tons of storage coal on hand, rising to 20000 30000 by summer. The branch reached Broadwater fourteen miles east of Northport, with possible westward extension to be decided soon. A broken left drive wheel on engine No 15 west of Elm Creek caused a derailment scare but no injuries or major damage.

Livery Outfit Change Sees Lord Lock Move Horses and Vehicles

A. M. Lock yesterday purchased from Mr. Frost the livery outfit of the former Salisbury barn on Front Street. The purchase included sixteen horse head and seventeen vehicles of various kinds. Today he moves them to his barn on Fourth and Locust Streets with plans for a new outfit on Front Street later.

Local Burglary Hits Julius Pizer Store

A Friday night break in at Julius Pizer's shop nets six dollars from a register in nickels and dimes while eight dollars remain. The thief tried to crack the safe but failed and appears to have hidden in the store, exiting via the back door. Local suspect is a resident.

Board delays ward school bids until May 27

The board of education met Saturday evening and received sealed bids for the new ward school houses but deferred opening and considering them until May 27. Several bids were submitted for the general contract and for heating and plumbing separately, with bidders in town disappointed by the delay.

New Time Card Changes Train Departures And Arrivals

A new time card takes effect Sunday altering leaving times for trains No 1 and No 2 and bringing trains No 6 and 206 into the terminal earlier. No 1 now leaves at 3 10 P M and No 2 at 3 30 P M, two and a half and two hours earlier respectively. Train No 6 arrives at 6 40 A M ten minutes earlier while No 206 Denver train arrives at 6 50 A M fifteen minutes earlier.

Banquet Honors Buffalo Bill in Philadelphia

Banquet for Col. W. F. Cody hosted by Rodman Wanamaker in Philadelphia featured an illuminated address presented by General Nelson A. Miles on behalf of Wanamaker's. The buffalo hide testimonial lauded Cody as a veteran scout admired by many across generations.

Birck Seeks Divorce on Desertion Grounds

Harold Birck filed in district court for divorce from his wife Inga E. Birck on grounds of desertion. J F Schmalzried recently bought 640 acres north of P. H. Ruddy and plans spring handover to his son Fred and son-in-law Otto Mesmer for farming and stock raising. J W Abbott, ex cashier of Hershey bank, now in real estate, spent yesterday in town. Mr and Mrs Chas BE Matson arrived from Lincoln and will reside permanently. Matson will lead Lincoln Development Co business owning Bignell town site and nearby large land holdings.
