The council debated a 10 percent increase vs maintaining current rates to curb the water plant deficit accumulated over the winter. Officials cited higher operating costs, rising material and labor prices, and the need to avoid larger interest charges or bond issuance. A $1.50 yearly impact on the average consumer was noted, with no rise in the basic rate.
North Platte barbers who walked out Tuesday morning returned to work yesterday afternoon after a one o'clock meeting settled differences between employers and men. The conference was peaceful, arguments were dispassionate, and a compromise was reached with no ill feeling between employer and employee. New Georgetta blouses advertised at E T TRAMP SONS.
Miss Alma Morrill presents crayon sketches of North Platte figures at the Red Cross theatre tonight. She depicts fourteen subjects including nine service boys and five prominent patriots. Reels feature unusually meritorious visuals between shows.
At the regular meeting of chapter A K P EB 0 in Megist plans for the June state convention entertainment were finalized. Officers for the coming year were re elected: President Hattie Rincker, Vice President Daisy Hinman, Recording Secretary Hattie Prosser, Corresponding Secretary Jennie Miltenberger, Treasurer Maude Hendy, Chaplain Helen White, Guard Winnie Scott. Lulu Morey named pianist and M B Crosby journalist.
Postmaster McEvoy is advised that in the near future all alien women over fourteen must register. Postmasters countywide to notify patrons and register alien women in line with prior alien male registrations. The notice urges wartime economy and mentions local sales, events, and community updates.
German books were burned on Dewey Street amid a patriotism fueled vigil. A dirge to the Kaiser accompanied the blaze as onlookers praised the destruction and called for cultural purge rather than preservation.
Enlistees Chas McNeel and John White reach Pacific coast camp and report training is demanding but favorable. Other servicemen noted include Mimer Lofdah’s brother Kiner in Manila, Robert Evans with 18 years in service, George Pepke awaiting furlough, and George Dewey preparing to join Camp Funston with the third call. A job ad seeks a gas tractor operator at 108 West Firat Street.
Union Pacific and Northwestern employees expect minor gains from a proposed government wage scale. Shop workers already earned more than the new schedule, while traincrew members see little benefit. Section men report a wage rise from 1.50 in 1915 to 2.50 per day, exceeding the proposed plan.
The Sammy Girls' will host a supper next Tuesday evening in the Methodist church dining room for des pites attending the stock breeders' association and local businesspeople and spouses. Tickets are one dollar per plate with a menu including roast beef and gravy mashed potatoes baked beans salad jelly strawberries and coffee. Supt William Tout leaves for Omaha on business for a few days.
Demonstration of Nash Tractor is set for Saturday in May at the Lith farm on the southwest edge of town. All interested invited to attend. The inventor and company president will present. Orr and Ganit are general agents, Lewellen Nebraska.
Red Cross sponsored patriotic film show titled Wake Up America screens for school children at 3 30 pm and the public at 8 16 pm with no admission. The program portrays Belgium and France, Red Cross efforts, and calls for universal American effort to defeat Prussianism and support troops. L A Zehring to speak on war conditions. Dodge Brothers cars advertised.
