Major Fred J. Wurtele formerly served as captain in the medical corps and was promoted to major. He has been transferred to West Point military academy with his wife and daughter accompanying him. A recommendation for promotion to lieutenant colonel accompanies the transfer.
At the Red Cross executive committee meeting Tuesday Miss Sarah Kelly was named secretary of the Home Service section, replacing Civilian Relief. The six week Home Service School begins April 15 in Omaha or Lincoln, and Kelly, active in war work with the Sammy Girls and Canteen service, joins expectedly.
A petition circulated among west Fourth street property owners asks the city to create a paving district from Locust to Washington Avenue, eleven blocks. At present only a small percentage of owners have been approached for signatures as of last evening. Judge Woodhurst married Tuesday O H Westerfeld of Canton Illinois and Mary A Pena of Salt Lake City.
The Chamber of Commerce directors met Wednesday to compare road making machinery options and local dealer prices from about 1000 to 3700 dollars. They approved ordering a road maintainer at roughly 575 dollars and will test each machine before committing to tractors or trucks. A road committee led by H. L. Pennington, W. J. Hendy and J. B. Nelson will supervise the project.
Marion Hankins of near Paxton described his World War I ordeal. Wounded in the St Mihiel sector, captured while swimming a stream, he was treated in a German hospital in Alsace then held in a prison camp. He credits American Red Cross packages for meals and was exchanged after the armistice and sent home.

After eleven months in service with nine and a half months in France Everett Adama Gil bert Adama Orlie Reneau and Lawrence Wilson arrived home this morning. They enlisted in February 1918 and reached France within five weeks. They left Brent five weeks ago today and were expected to be joined by George Sizemore soon. The men return in good health and neat in uniform though they endured hard training meals and crowded quarters. They would prefer not to repeat the experience.

Jerry Bowen of Arthur died at a local hospital at 10 15 Wednesday night from kidney trouble. He was brought from Arthur Monday night and his condition gave little hope of recovery. He leaves two daughters Mrs Rh S Baker of Curtis and Mrs Ralph Clabaugh of Corpus Christi Texas. Burial planned in local cemetery. The Oshkosh boys and girls basketball teams arrived last night to play twin games at Franklin auditorium this evening.
