Engineer Smith Retires After Four Decades of Service
Engineer J J Smith retires after forty four years with Union Pacific from North Platte to Grand Island averaging a mile per minute on No 5 He began on a ranch in Danville and rose from fireman to engineer in 1879 He is the oldest engineer on the Nebraska division and will oversee the suburban irrigation ditch and manage a remaining farm near town while staying engaged in community affairs.

American Legion posts in Lincoln county are asked to send representatives to a Tuesday March 9 meeting in the Franklin auditorium. Harn and Ferris Form Cement Brick Partnership
H B Harn and R W Ferris, long time brick masons, have formed a partnership to manufacture cement brick. They secured a site on Coast Front Street, erected a temporary building, and expect to produce 5,000 bricks daily within two to three weeks. They offer pressed bricks in any color and claim longer lasting than clay brick, with local rough brick priced at 16 per 1000 while clay brick fetches about 40. A permanent brick facility and drying sheds will follow once operations are underway.

Two Family Members Die Within Twelve Hours This Week
The Rector family suffers back to back losses as Mrs. Rector dies from a paralytic stroke and son John Raymond dies from pneumonia within twelve hours. Mrs. Rector, sixty, had lived in North Pattie area for over thirty years and was highly esteemed. Surviving relatives include husband Homer Rector and William Rector of New York City, daughters Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Howenshall, the latter in California. John Raymond Rector was seventeen, a high school student and popular with classmates. The piece notes a newborn daughter of Mrs. Miller born at the Rector home during the crisis.
