June term federal court opens with several guilty pleas

Judge Woodrough presides as the June term of the federal court convenes with Clerk Hoyt and Marshall Flynn present. Plea entries include H Wisecarver Nick Kekers Thomas Marsh each receiving sixty day sentences in county or local jails for liquor charges. J Harshfield case partially dismissed with further counts to be heard today. Local social notes: Hattie Johnson leaves for Cheyenne. Mrs. Robert Beatty visits Brady. Robert Sailor returns from Hastings. Mr Peterson of Lincoln and Mr and Mrs Beecher Parker of Rawlins visiting town.

Soldier Boys Farewell Send Off At Lincoln County Event

About 1100 people attended at the Sammy Girla theatre for a farewell to Lincoln county soldiers bound for Camp Funston. A parade preceded the program with songs, readings, and remarks by Attorney Baskine and Judge Hoagland. Soldiers received sweaters and comfort kits, and a depot crowd of 2000 bid them good luck.

Former resident chokes wife to death aboard train

From a Kansas City paper comes news that J. Norton, who ran the Pat theatre in this city, confessed to choking his wife to death and pushing her body from a sleeping car window near Shelbing Missouri. Norton said he acted not from jealousy but from a twisted sense of love and denied premiditation.

Coal Prices Rise Twenty Five Percent Freight Costs Drive Increase

Effective today the price of all coal will rise seventy five cents per ton. The increase does not apply to stock held before today but local dealers report scarce supplies. Freight rates up twenty five percent and higher dealer margins explain the rise. Residents have stored coal for winter though the surplus is not large due to limited availability.

School recruitment and staffing squeeze reported in city

Questionnaires mailed to 143 boys ask for seven day responses. City Supt. Tout departs for Lincoln to confer with State Supt. Reed on teaching needs. Miss Lucretia Davis, a commercial teacher, declines higher offers saying she has a contract for 140 dollars per month and will not stay. Marston Doollitie trains for an officers’ commission with the 319th engineers on the Pacific coast. Ancel Peterson, P. and H. ranch foreman, heads to Grand Island for business, while Harry Pizer seeks enlistment in Omaha for the quartermasters.
