Engineers and Firemen Vote to Refuse Mediation Strike Threat Looms
About 55,000 engineers and firemen on 98 western railroads rejected arbitration under the Erdman act and will strike if demands are rejected. They seek wage increases, shorter overtime, time and a half pay in freight, double time in passenger service, extra trip preparation pay, terminal delay allowances, higher through freight differentials, Mallet engine bonuses, and two firemen on large coal burners. Rail managers say meeting demands would raise payrolls by about 33 million dollars annually, roughly 50 percent.

Society Notes Highlight Week of Local Gatherings
A flurry of house parties and cordial gatherings marked the week. The Sexetette Club hosted a Morell home party and dinner for their boy friends, while the Royal Girls of the Methodist Church enjoyed a riverbank picnic led by teacher Mrs. W. C. McDermott. Marjorie Don entertained the Telikens at her home with games and refreshments, and Miss Plumer hosted a dinner and supper for guests from Chicago and Cheyenne. Alumni of the 600 Club met with Mrs. H. S. White for a light afternoon of 600 and luncheon, and Miss Flannah Kelcher entertained nieces Edwina Marcel and Eileen Kelcher with 38 guests. Several cards and social diversions concluded with refreshments as guests departed.

Deputy Postmaster Undergoes Two Operations in Omaha
