The Keith County News reports cattle thefts rising with over thirty head stolen in three months. Sheriffs hold one suspect in Alliance and focus on a local resident with a tarnished prior reputation. Arch Seale traveled to Alliance to recover six cattle, while eleven cattle from the Thal ken ranch are believed moved elsewhere.
Airs. M. J. Petree previously staying with her nephew Jon Erakine at Big well was taken in by Sheriff Salisbury early this week. A hearing before the insane board is set for this afternoon. Petree has suffered mental instability for years and was once an Ingleside inmate with Curtis listed as her home. Frontier county authorities approved the hearing and will cover related expenses.
A Washington dispatch says Budget lines show a $400 000 000 plant run by 750 workers would need two laborers per shift to produce ammunition for 100 000 troops and 1 000 000 recruits. General Crozier opposes federal war materiel supply, favoring private firms to augment government plants in war. Also notes court adjournments and judges returning from Shelbyville for a death.
Joseph Mersey Hershey, longtime North Platte business leader and former county commissioner and mayor, died at his residence after weeks of illness from pleurisy and pneumonia complications. Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he moved to Nebraska in 1879, managed the I. W. ranch, then partnered in hardware and implement trade with John Hollman. His passing ends a notable era in local commerce and public service.
Paul Gantt of this city married Miss Elizabeth Shirley of Lincoln yesterday afternoon at two o clock. The ceremony was at the Shirley home with H Hoilarmon of the Christan church officiating. Relatives and a few close friends attended. Miss Wirtle Biurey and Naber Gantt joined the couple at the event. A large dinner followed. The Gantts, who will reside on West Second, are well known in local society.
Miss Carrie Belton of San Vieto California, guest of her sister Mrs W H McDonald, expects to return home Thursday. Mr and Mrs Wm Plumer of Maxwell are due Thursday to visit friends for a few days before leaving for California to spend several months.
Field Manager Ryan for American Beet Sugar reports Sutherland may lack sufficient beets to secure a beet dump. Denver office notified. 400 acres needed for a dump, about 300 acres likely contracted locally. Factory caps territory at 2000 acres, with full contracts not yet met. Keystone and Maxwell areas unchecked. Overall 9000 acres to be contracted nationwide, with North Platte likely supplying about half the beets for Grand Island factory.
The case of Gladge Ritenour against Guy Fear began in district court and continues today. Ritenour accuses Fear of fathering her child born October 1914 after she was under legal age. Fear owns a Walace garage, has a wife and three children, and about a score of witnesses were summoned. The plaintiff is represented by Wm. G. Shuman and Sullivan & Squires. the defense by Wilcox & Halligan and Beeler & Crosby. The case will go to the jury this afternoon or evening.
Rail line workers and visitors frequent Sidney this week with notices of illness assignments and temporary changes. Attorneys, clerks, and travelers from Union Pacific and U P baggage room populate the day as small incidents and routine duties unfold around the depot.
Steward Smith led a supper for eighty Elks at the banquet hall last evening after a billiard tournament. Mrs. Smith prepared the menu with pork and bacon, baked beans, potatoes, cabbage salad, pies, and peaches and cream. A weather forecast was included with notes on tonight and Saturday’s chill and northeast winds.
