Engineer George Lannin slipped from the engine at the round house on Nine Elock Hill yesterday morning, striking head and shoulders. He was taken home and found to have a broken shoulder and a skull fracture, with brain injury likely. he remained unconscious and in critical condition.
The annual ball hosted by the locomotive firemen drew a large crowd of dancers and spectators. The hall was decorated with bunting and flags, Dounet's orchestra played superbly with encores. Emmett Moody of Kaiser, Colorado visits his brother en route to Missouri.
The 1917 year brought mixed farming returns but overall prosperity for Lincoln County. Wheat and corn losses were offset by high cattle hog and hay prices. bank deposits remained strong and merchants reported satisfactory business in North Platte. Commercial building activity rose but slowed by high material costs. owners expect prices to rise with continued war.
Washington reports Secretary McAdoo will soon raise wages for about 1.5 million railroad employees. The measure applies to all workers including Brotherhood members. The plan includes routing traffic from west to east through southern ports like New Orleans to ease congestion and improve war material transport.
The Woman's Relief Corps and Grand Army of the Republic announce a joint installation at the Odd Fellows hall next Saturday January 1st. Architect Beck completes plans for a two story conversion and third floor addition to the Hotel McCabe adding forty rooms. Each room will have hot and cold water heat and bath and the hotel will be positioned to serve the traveling public as a leading Nebraska hotel.

County Judge French issued two hundred and seventeen licenses to wed during 1917 setting a record. The rise partly reflects women becoming war brides, boosting marriage numbers beyond prior years.

The fourth annual Lincoln County Poultry Association show opens tomorrow at the Lloyd opera house and runs through Saturday. Secretary J A MacDonald is confident of large exhibits with many applications received. Some of the best birds in the state will be on display.

Brady native Corporal Ray E. Hannan died December 20 at Camp Cody. He enlisted in 1916 in North Platte, served on the Mexican border, and with Company L Gothenburg. Discharged in 1917, he was recalled last July and served with the 134th Infantry.
The Division Eight Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers will hold an officer installation at the K P hall on Wednesday evening January 9 at eight o'clock. A smoker will follow the ceremony featuring international badges of the B L E presented to W H Pikes William Whitlock and Fred Frederickson, long time members and former Wells Pacific engineers now retired on pension. The badges honor forty or more years of membership. Attendance is encouraged for all members able to come.
Washington reports claim Germany faces serious food pinch with official data indicating distress while not yet starving. The note adds hope of Russian grain, though blockade forecasts complicate relief. Also, the Cuban sugar crop sale to the US and allies is nearly finalized at about 3.6 million tons for about four dollars and sixty cents per hundred pounds.
Judge HH Grimes announces court terms for 1918 across Lincoln Keith Cheyenne Kimball McPherson and surrounding counties with jury terms set on various dates. Separate notices list January April May June September and November juries for each county.
