The milky look of city water is from air caused by switching from new to old pumps during repairs. It should clear after standing a minute or two and fully dissipate within a day or two. Samples were sent to the state bacteriologist. report says the water is acceptable.
A historical call to reduce refined sugar use citing honey syrups and fruits as substitutes. It notes Allied nations rationing sugar to illustrate patriotism and urges readers to cut their own consumption as a small sacrifice.

Mrs John Connor informed of brother Wilfred Kammerer’s furlough to England and six months service stripe.

With about half the state reporting Neville leads Bryan for governor by around 7,000 votes and is expected to grow as full returns come in. McKervie, the Republican candidate, trails with weak opposition. Morehead leads Norris for United States senator by about 19,000, while Sload trails by about 200 in the Republican primary. W. Pool is set to oppose M. P. Kinkaid in the congressional district contest.
A Washington dispatch reports mounting opposition among some congressmen to drafting twenty one year olds into the army. The struggle threatens to derail plans to field eighty American divisions in France by June next year and to meet War Department targets for ending the war by 1919.
At a Hershey meeting FF C Donnelly was unanimously chosen captain and a committee was named to study securing uniforms. A war mothers association formed at Maxwell with officers named and a constitution committee chosen. Volunteers urged to join the Home Guard and drill master arrangements noted.
Allied forces advance along nearly the entire front from Ypres to Soissons as French and British units push toward evacuation of the Somme Oise salient. Mangin and Humbert troops gain ground near Soissons and the Oise, while Haig’s 10 mile offensive north of the Somme yields villages, guns, and heavy casualties. Lys sector sees outward Allied progress within a four mile front toward the 1916 line near Armen tieres.
The State Journal notes McKelvie and Governor Neville share age and opposition to the same farmer elements. Dissatisfaction within farmers unions and the non-partisan league prompts talk of a petition driven farmer candidate. Potential split could impact Neville or McKelvie more, though success seems unlikely.
Baptist church schedules Sunday school at 9 45 morning worship at 11 00 and evening service at 7 00. Also notes dissolution of Diener and Fleischman Boots and Shoes firm with W H Diener authorized to settle debts and continue business at the old stand.
Clayton Wheelock left for Camp Funston then reportedly sailed overseas with a hospital unit. Ray Peters reports from an eastern camp that he has transferred to Camp Mereson Atlanta and that he was released after eight months in Camp Cody hospital with five operations. Corporal Will Rinter at Camp Fremont California earned a sharp shooter rating of forty seven hits out of fifty at 600 yards and may be sent east for refitting. Leon Stone and Joe Pizer have been in Denver for days while Loren Sturges, in France, sent two engraved brass shell vases to Mrs Lillian Gleason as a wartime memento.
The Nebraska State Council of Defense urges immediate destruction of all barberry hedges except the Japanés variety. Barberry hedges are declared a public menace to welfare and all maintenance sale or production forbidden. Earlier pleas failed to gain compliance and further resistance will be met summarily to protect wheat production.
Announcement by C. Liebold secretary for Henry Ford states Ford will send every cent of his war material contract profits to the United States treasury. Ford Motor Co. holds over half the contracts and he will not keep a dollar of his share. The fate of other stockholders is unspecified but Ford urges their similar action. Claude Delany returned this morning from a brief visit in Omaha.
