The state board of equalization decided not to approve a proposed twenty percent raise on land values in Lincoln county. The assessment will stand as returned by the assessors to avoid injustice to local real estate owners.
The county commissioners met in session to approve cash for road overseers and to authorize claims for road work. They adjourned and reconvened to handle levies for the county, precinct, and school district Tunis.
The Bee named Bert Rodgers as the fatal stabber, while Denver papers claimed John Weinberger was seriously injured. Rodgers did not participate in the fracas and Weinberger’s wound proved not dangerous. Weinberger returned home Sunday and is seen about town.
W. T. Wilcox and J. J. Halligan arrived Sunday from a European trip visiting England Ireland Scotland and France. They gathered information on general conditions of the peoples and shared many entertaining travel episodes with friends. They enjoyed good health except for a seasick spell crossing the English Channel and both returned feeling well.
W H McDonald guided a trip to Gandye and Stapleton with Will Maloney Walter O Connell and the writer enjoying high life on sandy reverse curve roads. Stapleton’s future looks good with a dozen firms building two brick or cement blocks and a new hotel ready in a week or 30 days. The depot is an attractive booking one and an elevator to be completed this week. A nearby grove will become a park with twenty tents for carpenters and laborers. The wooded land could be worth fifty thousand dollars to North Platte if located there. Stapleton is set to be a mighty good trading town.
In Galveston on August 11 1912 the Studebaker racing team led by Bob Evans finished fourth in the 200 mile event, beating several Case and other competitors. Evans completed the race with one pit stop, while rivals included the White Streak Ballet Six Special National Fiat Stutz Buick Lozier Simplex and another National. Weather was forecast fair with mild temperatures. Local dealer contact info appears in the report.
W W Hunter a well known south side farmer will marry at the M E parsonage this afternoon to Mrs Williams, a former house keeper. He is a widower and she previously served as his household employee.
Tf. D. Herzog returned from a western state tour promoting the Buick car for J. B. Davis Auto Co. Crop conditions were excellent, residents felt prosperous, and the Buick model was well received. He sold the demonstration car and forty three of the new 1918 Model Buicks.
The Omaha Bee reports that with President Mohler's return an extension of ten miles on the Kearney and Northport line is authorized. The line will run from Gering to Mitchell in Scott's Bluff county, passing through irrigated farmland. Completion and operation are expected this fall.
The Lincoln County Sunday School Association holds its annual convention at the Presbyterian church next Saturday and Sunday, August 24 and 25. Distinguished speakers include Margaret Ellen Brown state secretary, Mr. Kimberly field manager, and Wm. Findlay Dawson county president, with representatives from many local Sunday schools expected.
A committee found the secretary and treasurer’s books correct and that bills payable exceed receipts by $14. The deficit falls to about $600 after pledges, triggering an assessment of six to seven dollars per stock share. Board will publish receipts and disbursements after an early meeting. Over four years stock assessments have approached the face value, with stockholders contributing about $4,000 in cash for community benefits.

District Court will convene for one week beginning August 26. Mrs. McDaniel of Arguile Missouri is a guest of the Cohagen home this week. The Presbyterian Aid Society will meet in the church parlors Thursday afternoon. Jay Hollingsworth of Ogalala has ordered a Model 25 1913 touring car from J. S. Davis Auto Co. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Howard and children spent Saturday in Grand Island with the former's mother. Mrs. J. J. Horrigan arrived Sunday night from Boone Iowa and will visit her parents Mr. and Mrs. Maloney.
Mrs. Fred Garlow hosted the Saturday Bridge Club with a pretty party and refreshments. A Friday social dance at the Lloyd opera house drew a good crowd. Ernest Kincker, just coming of age, hosted a six o'clock dinner for ten male friends, with Mrs. Rincker preparing the course meal. Miss Lara Murray organized a lawn party and linen shower for about twenty-five ladies, with Mrs. Clarence Garman as guest of honor, including knotting two quilts and a group photo before departure.
Fred Ginn and Platt White sold their interests in Ginn White Schatz Co to partner Albert Schatz. Ginn retires to pursue other business. stock was previously sold to Howe Maloney and Derryberry Forbes, with the remainder sold yesterday. Schatz, a prominent North Platte businessman, assumes ownership and continues the firm’s west state leadership and trade outreach.
A Nebraska man, J B Cross, reported losing thirty five dollars in cash and a forty five dollar check on a street car last Saturday. The check was later delivered to the North Platte post office and is to be returned to J B Cross, age ninety, father of Fred Cross of the Nebraska House. The thief discarded the back of the check in Omaha, and the mail system redirected it to North Platte, where it will be presented to Cross on his arrival.

Board grants and establishes road No 366 from section 24 township 10 range 2 to Dickens along C B Q right of way and refunds deposit to E C Newman. Also lists various cash allowances for road districts and per-district work. Board adjourns to Aug 19 1912 and reconvenes for equalization.
