The life of Col. Narbonne, born 1805 in St. Remy Parish Laprairie, details his early work as a painter, his steadfast opposition to Tory rule, and his role in Lacadie politics. It recounts his capture after the Odelltown and Moore incidents, lengthy imprisonment, mistreatment, and his execution on February 15, amid belief he died a martyr for liberty.
The period recounts French governors from Roberval to Vaudreuil de Cavagnal, noting Champlain’s esteem, Frontenac’s clashes with clergy, and Vaudreuil’s controversial capitulation. It discusses Canada’s shift to British rule, Jesuit land holdings, and claims of colonial misrule, contrasted with limited press and evolving constitutional ideas. It also cites a brutal incident under Murray involving Nadeau, illustrating harsh colonial justice.
